What’s your definition of an Event Coordinator?
A multi-hat wearing planner, facilitator, mediator, artisan and organizer of all parties concerned, who’s "on top" of everything, able to implement details related to and regarding the event, while facilitating responsibilities for not only the client, but for all parties involved; family, guests, vendors and spectators – and through it all remaining calm, collected and smiling.
What inspires your designs?
When it comes to a wedding it is important to always remember the real reason we are celebrating: two people are coming together as one. Marriage is a Rite of Passage. Therefore, it is my belief that the wedding should celebrate the couple getting married. The ceremony should never be overlooked and the celebration should reflect their style, tastes, and interests. Before I even start asking them about their ceremony or reception, I try to get to know who they really are by asking a series of questions. One that really throws them is when I ask how they decorate their home, or wish to decorate their home. The style in which they live is where they are most comfortable and I want their wedding to be comfortable, too. Same goes for fashion and dress. Their everyday style tells me a lot about them. I also ask them about their free time and how they unwind. My clients are not just a file of contracts, arrangements and color swatches. It’s important to me that I learn a little about them so that I can tailor my creative designs for every element of their wedding.
I am very lucky to have planned some fabulous parties for some very exceptional couples and their families!
What are some of your favorite design elements?
One thing that I love (and seem to do a lot of) is a tent wedding. For me, a tent is a “blank canvas”. You can practically put a tent up anywhere and at anytime. Before you even start designing the interior of the tent, the setting in which is sits contributes to the ambiance. Some of my best and most favorite events were in a tent. And that includes my own wedding reception!
Another element that I love is lighting. Color speaks volumes when it comes to mood and ambiance! Lighting through color-washing, globos, spots and patterns can go so far at a very reasonable price. The simplest of designs, flowers and table linens can be accelerated to a new level with proper lighting design.
Personal touches are another thing. I am never about pushing a trend on a couple because it’s “the IT thing to do”. I am all about creating new trends and ideas by inspiring my couples to express themselves through event features or by adding personal touches to traditional aspects. When you bring innovated designs to an event that remind guests of the couple, then that’s when they can’t stop talking about the party. And it’s those personal touches that keep them talking for years!
